el hogar filipino

El Hogar Filipino - Escolta, Manila

This beautiful beaux-arts building, designed by architect Irrureta Goyena and set by the Pasig River on Mulle dela Industria in Binondo, was built as a wedding gift for the union of a Zobel daughter and a Preuvian count back in 1914.  It housed the offices of the lending company El Hogar Filipino... The El Hogar Filipino, almost a century-old, stands forlorn on the seedy southern end of Juan Luna Street (Anloague Stree, where Kapitan Tiago's house in Jose Rizal's novel Noli me Tangere, once stood.

The more I see of your city, the more I am in love with your architecture.

I am glad that you can relate this location
to a street mentioned in Rizal's 'Noli me
Tangere'. I have worked in Escolta and rode
through Jones bridge going to work and used to eat a lot around the area. Somehow your pictures made me aware of things I ignored during those times. Wish I could have paid more attention.

Hi!!!
I chanced upon your blog while looking for photo blogs about Manila. I'm glad I found your blog. Moreso because you have a pic of the EL Hogar and I am so happy to have seen it finally! I am a law student and we have read a case about El Hogar in our Corporation class and I was naturally curious about it.
Thanks for sharing the beauty of Manila for the world to see :)

Yes, there is really such a majestic building in the heart of Manila. Sadly, it may disappear in the very near future.

El Hogar Filip;ino Bldg. is not situated in Escolta. It is at the corner of Juan Luna and Muelle de la Industria Sts., along the Pasig river.
