During the San Isidro Pahiyas Festival, each household tries to outdo each other in friendly competition as they vie for honor of recognizing their creativity.

Farmers show their bountiful produce such as chayote, radish, pepper and grains of rice. There are miniatures locally known as "ANOK", fruits, vegetables and longganisa. The handicraft manufacturer has his house decked with colorful buri/buntal hats, bags, placemats and others.

The most traditional and certainly the most attractive décor comes of course in the form of "KIPING" which are adorn and strung together to form all sorts of shapes, from chandelier called "ARANGYA" to huge flowers. Kiping is made from ground rice flour, shaped using "cabal" leaves or other leaf forms and colored in radiant red, fuschia, yellow, green and other bright shades. When kiping catches the light of the sun it turns into a veritable cascades of color.

The celebration is a form of thanksgiving for a bountiful harvest and in honor of the patron saint of farmers, San Isidro de Labrador. A procession of the image of San Isidro is planned long before the festival and it is said that houses along the route of the procession passes will be especially favored and blessed in the coming year. It is from this belief that the lavish decoration of the home began. After all, one must welcome the saint's blessings with rapture and gratitude.

where are thou?

in support to our fellow CDP - Amir of Tehranlive.org - who has been missing since June 17 and is suspected that he was one of many iranians who were arrested during the protests, he has been blogging non stop about the situation in tehran and has captured photos of the demostration which international magazines have published his photos. we want our blogger back.. this is also in recognition of the spirit of iranians who want change and wishing for a better world. i totally forgot about the theme day, good thing i always check out Eric's blog and remembered that today is circles theme day for the DP community. My photo is of Christmas ornaments being sold at Dvisoria, i think they are dried pine tree fruits covered with colorful and festive paint. somehow it reminds me of corals under the sea :). have a happy theme day everyone! theme day: lines

what a great day to start the month of october, its a holiday here in the Philippines because the government declared today a regular holiday in observance of the feast of end of Ramadan but had miscalculated the date LOL! anyways our muslim brothers celebrated the Eid ul-Fitr yesterday, thanks anyways that we have an extra holiday today.

It is another theme day for the City Daily Photo community, and for the month of october it is all about lines.  my photo is from my archive and shows the coconut trees lining manila bay, twas a great afternoon sunset view (cant go out today since we do have a typhoon named Pablo - Metro Manila is now under public storm warning signal No. 2, meaning winds of 60-100 kph.)

Here's what you can see inside Tuklas or the Science Through Discovery Theme at Museo Pambata. You can play a junior scientist and unravel scientific principles behind everyday things. Plus there is this spherical metal where you can view a moon rock from the historic Apollo 11 expedition.

jones bridge

This is the Jones Bridge at night (note: photo is from my archive, i've already posted here a different view of this bridge). This bridge was once hailed as the queen of the bridges crossing the Pasig River. Jones Bridge was named after William Atkinson Jones, a member of the U.S. Congress and chairman of the Insular Affairs Committee who sponsored the Philippine Autonomy Act in 1916.
