andres in manila

Photo: Another angle of the Bonifacio Shrine with the Manila City Hall tower as background.

Andres Bonifacio y de Castro (November 30, 1863 – May 10, 1897), one of the most loved hero by the masses, a Filipino revolutionary leader and one of the main rebel leaders of the Philippine Revolution against Spanish colonial rule in the late 19th century. He is regarded as the "Father of the Philippine Revolution" and one of the most influential national heroes of his country. A freemason, Bonifacio was the founder of the Katipunan organization which aimed to start an independence movement against Spain.

There are many monuments erected for Andres Bonifacio but the most recognized monument is the Bonifacio Monument at Caloocan City, sculpted by Guillermo Tolentino.

bayan ko

Bayan Ko by Freddie Aguilar
Ang bayan kong Pilipinas
Lupain ng ginto't bulaklak
Pag-ibig na sa kanyang palad
Nag-alay ng ganda't dilag
At sa kanyang yumi at ganda
Dayuhan ay nahalina
Bayan ko, binihag ka
Nasadlak sa dusa
Ibon mang may layang lumipad
Kulungin mo at umiiyak
Bayan pa kayang sakdal-dilag
Ang 'di magnasang makaalpas
Pilipinas kong minumutya
Pugad ng luha at dalita
Aking adhika
Makita kang sakdal laya

Bayan Ko is one of the most poignant patriotic songs in the Philippines. It was originally written as a poem by José Corazón de Jesús in 1929, and set to music by Constancio de Guzman. Written as a protest song during the American occupation of the Philippines, it is often sung in protest rallies and demonstrations throughout Philippine history, notably during the funeral of Sen. Benigno "Ninoy" Aquino, Jr. and the ensuing People Power Revolution where Freddie Aguilar led the crowd to sing the song's chorus.

puv fare increase

Less than two months ago when i posted about the increase of jeepney fare and with the soaring oil price of petroleum products, another fare increase for public utility vehicles has been approved by the LTFRB starting friday.

"MANILA, Philippines—An additional burden on commuters but a small relief for drivers and owners of public utility vehicles.

Starting this Friday, the minimum fare for public buses, taxis and jeepneys will go up by at least 7 percent, the Land Transportation Franchising and Regulatory Board (LTFRB) announced Tuesday.

LTFRB Chair Thomas Lantion said Malacañang ordered the fare increases. Transport groups seeking fare hikes are usually given 10 days to present their respective positions.

Based on Lantion’s announcement, jeepneys may charge a minimum fare of P8.50, up 50 centavos, and an additional 25 centavos, or from P1.25 to P1.50, for each succeeding kilometer.

Taxicabs may start charging an “add-on” rate of P10. However, there will be no increase in the flag-down rate and waiting time.

Buses plying Metro Manila routes may charge an additional P1, or from P9 to P10 for the first five kilometers, with additional 20 centavos for every succeeding kilometer (P1.75 to P1.95).

Air-conditioned buses may charge P12 from P11.50 plus P2.35 per succeeding kilometer from P1.75." read more here

my manila

i'm posting my DP theme day for the month of february earlier, "what your city is known for." i think when you say manila, you automatically conjured up the Jeepney in your mind, Jeepney is Manila's main means of public transportation and is a symbol of the Philippine culture. (Photo taken in front of Manila City Hall)
I believe that Manila can be a reflection of your state of mind. Being a city of extreme contrasts it’s easy to see how it can become an intense personal experience. Manila can be chaotic and spiritual, dirty and divine, gritty and gorgeous all at once. If you don’t find beauty and poetry here, you will never find it anywhere. ~ Carlos Celdran
P.S. I am taking a break from blogging and i dunno when I will post again (could be a week or more), but that doesn’t mean I am going to stop taking pictures of my beautiful manila. trike?

Dunno what do you call this vehicle but it surely did call my attention, a colorful contrast to the whiteness of the city hall's building. If you'd notice, it still bears the former mayor's name, wonder how long before they replace it. Of course, i had my picture taken inside the vehicle :)

yesterday's answer

Sidney was so close in guessing where the lines of yesterday's photo can be found... its the front yard of the Manila City Hall. This is where the city hall's employees hold their monday mornings flag ceremony and where the mayor usually give his speech/announcement. Aren't the lines fabulous? I always find it fascinating whenever i passed by it and looking down from the LRT.

september theme day

So here we go again, the 1st day of the month which means the DP family theme day. September's theme is about street lights and signs. I've decided to go with this street lamp beside the Manila City Hall. Yes, that white building in the background is the city hall. I just like how these white lamps look like balloons, and i like the way it still stood out in the white background. I assure you that they really look great in the evening i just didnt have the time to shoot it at night. See my yesterday's photo of this lamp showing its beautiful post.

Here's the list of 108 blogs around the world that participated in this month's theme day... please take the time to visit them. Was planning to use this photo for the theme day but decided to go for a different picture which you'll see tomorrow. This is the Manila City Hall's sidewalk/pathway, i just love the lamps here, if you enlarge the photo you'll see a couple at the end of the road.

ma'am this aint a church

...this is the Manila City Hall's Clock Tower.
Was riding the LRT and i was sitting beside a family, from time to time the mother would point out buildings, and other point of interest to her daughter... when we're approaching the city hall, the mother blurted out to the kid that the tower is a church! I was shocked! and i thought every Manileño... that EVERY filipino knows the city hall... that it IS a manila landmark aside of course from Jose Rizal's monument at Luneta Park.

manila city hall

The Manila City Hall at night.... I'd been meaning to post a picture of the city hall at night because it is a spectacular sight but i can only give you a blurry image, my hands are shaking as usual and i really need to get a tripod and a decent camera. Anyways what you see in front is the famous Philippine jeepney. Not sure what is the problem though why the driver is checking out its engine.

city under attack!!!

Well not really, dont worry our city is safe. It just seem to appear that this cannon is aimed at Manila City Hall's tower from this view. This is one of the cannons that lined up the main front of the intramuros walls. For more pictures of the cannons click here.
